Under the shadow of the US invasion, an extended Afghan refugee family begins their new lives in Iran unaware of the ultimate price expected of them as outliers in this (un)welcoming environment: Mohammad, a young teenager and promising student; Leila, a woman isolated by geography, and Qasem who bears the weight of his family’s sacrifice.

RAHA AMIRFAZLI | ALIREZA GHASEMI

Raha Amirfazli, an Iranian filmmaker and MFA candidate at NYU Tisch, debuted with IN THE LAND OF BROTHERS, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, winning Best Directing. She was awarded the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women in 2024 and is working on her second feature. Alireza Ghasemi, an Iranian filmmaker and Art University of Tehran graduate, is known for award-winning shorts like BETTER THAN NEIL ARMSTRONG AND LUNCH TIME (Cannes 2017). His debut feature, IN THE LAND OF BROTHERS, won Best Directing at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. He is a Berlinale Talents 2022 alumnus.
