Betânia, a 65-year-old family matriarch, faces a turbulent journey after her husband’s death, forcing her to return to her rural village in Maranhão. Leaving behind a simple life without electricity, she grapples with the challenges of a changing world. Amidst a harsh, desert-like environment, Betânia and her family strive to preserve their traditions while navigating the tensions between old and new. Despite financial struggles, generational conflicts, and environmental hardships, life finds a way.

ತನ್ನ ಪತಿಯ ನಿಧನದ ನಂತರ 65 ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನ ಬೆಟಾನಿಯಾಳ ಬದುಕು ಛಿದ್ರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುವುದೇ ಕಷ್ಟವೆನಿಸಿ ಅವಳು ಮಾರನಾಹೋ ಗ್ರಾಮಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ನೆಲಸಬೇಕಾದ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯತೆ ಎದುರಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿದ್ಯುತ್‌ ಸೌಕರ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಳ ಬದುಕು ನಡೆಸಬೇಕಾದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬಂದೊದಗಿದೆ. ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ಸವಾಲುಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅವಳು ಸೆಣೆಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಾತೃ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಕುಟುಂಬವು ಹಳೆಯ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಪದ್ಧತಿಗಳ ನಡುವೆಯೇ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲೂ ಶ್ರಮಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ, ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳ ಸಂಘರ್ಷ ಹಾಗೂ ಪರಿಸರ ಅಸಮತೋಲನದ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಅವರ ಜೀವನ ಹೊಸಮಾರ್ಗ ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

MARCELO BOTTA

Marcelo Botta (b. 1984) is a Brazilian filmmaker whose work spans over 20 countries, from the Amazon and Patagonia to the Andes, the Atacama Desert, and the Caribbean. BETANIA (2024), his debut feature, was selected for the Berlinale (Panorama) winning three post-production awards at Ventana Sur’s First Cut session in 2022. Before BETANIA, Botta directed both documentary and fiction series for Paramount+, MTV, and FOX, bringing his storytelling vision to diverse cultures and landscapes worldwide.
